Working on AHS: Double Feature
The 10th season of American Horror Story was shut down as the Covid-19 outbreak began. When production resumed, the decision was made to tell two American Horror Stories in one season.
Our first story took us to modern-day Provincetown, Massachusetts – where an aspiring writer discovers just how far he will go to achieve greatness.
The second half of the season told an Area 51 origin story set in the 1950’s and 60’s. Conspiracies fly when the Eisenhower administration discovers (and covers up) an alien crash site.
A top secret intelligence briefing packet detailing the extraterrestrial discovery.
This back half of the season was to be shot in black and white to evoke a film noir style, so I created a reference packet to help our production designer choose colors based on how they would translate to greyscale.
In this world of what-ifs, the AHS writers reimagined a series of historical events through a conspiracy theorist’s lens.
I was tasked with creating dozens of period documents to highlight these events, including newspapers and birthday party receipts for First Lady Mamie Eisenhower.
I developed a signature ink-transfer printing technique to quickly give documents an authentic analog typewritten texture. I still use this technique to this day!
